Member of the Supervisory Board

Cordaid is one of the largest Dutch development organizations with 14 offices and more than 1,000 employees worldwide.  We are part of international networks, such as Caritas Internationalis and ACT Alliance. In the Netherlands, we are supported by 250,000 private donors and HNWIs. In addition, we have a broad portfolio of institutional donors, including governments, international organizations and foundations.   Cordaid is looking for a new

Member of the Supervisory Board

with a background in international cooperation in the Global South and fundraising

This supervisor must have direct work experience in the Global South and a demonstrable commitment to international cooperation and fundraising. The ideal candidate not only brings knowledge of international development issues, but also practical experience and a network within the social field of low- and middle-income countries.

The Supervisory Board plays an active role in guiding Cordaid's strategic course. The organization is in a fundamental transition from an executive organization to an internationally operating network organization that strengthens local partners, shares knowledge and works systemically. In this process, it is important that the Supervisory Board is strengthened with supervisors who have experience in international networks, NGOs or civil society institutions in the Global South, and who have a good understanding of the shifts in the sector.

The Supervisory Board currently consists of seven members and strives for diversity in background, expertise, geographical distribution, age and gender. Cordaid attaches importance to strengthening perspectives that are still underrepresented within the supervisory body. Candidates with a multicultural background, from or working in the Global South for a long time, are therefore explicitly invited to apply. The Supervisory Board members support Cordaid's mission and values, which are partly inspired by Christian-social thinking, and appreciate that Cordaid is connected to the church locally and internationally.

Membership of the Supervisory Board requires an average of two days a month of commitment, which includes six plenary meetings per year, plus work in one of the Supervisory Board's subcommittees, preparation, thematic sessions and occasional field visits. The work of the Supervisory Board members is unpaid.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has direct work or managerial experience in countries in the Global South, for example within civil society organisations, foundations, multilateral institutions or social enterprises;
  • Has a demonstrable commitment to international cooperation and a keen eye for global power relations, local dynamics, and the role of international NGOs in strengthening local resilience;
  • Has experience or affinity with fundraising – this can be through institutional donors, foundations, equity funds or innovative forms of financing in philanthropy;
  • Supports Cordaid's mission and values, which are partly inspired by Christian-social thinking, and appreciates that Cordaid is connected to the churches locally and internationally.

Due to the increasing complexity of partnerships, donor relations, and the importance of visibility in the international arena, the new member is expected to:

  • Have a vision on the role of civil society organisations in postcolonial contexts;
  • Is able to reflect on questions of power, control, decentralization and ownership;
  • Preferably has a relevant network within the international philanthropy, donor community or civil society in the Global South;
  • Fluent in English (Dutch is an advantage, but not required in this specific role).
