And what need to be the priorities of the international community in this regard?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThe men made war but hopefully the women will make peace.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To answer these and other questions, Cordaid, in collaboration with Yemeni partner organisations <a href=\"http:\/\/fcdf-ye.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Family Counseling and Development Foundation<\/a> (FCDF) and <a href=\"https:\/\/yamaan.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Yamaan Foundation<\/a>, organised a conference on Yemen on December 2, 2021, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanityhub.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hague Humanity Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stronger position for women, safer society<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Its purpose was to draw attention to the political and humanitarian situation in a country that is largely forgotten by western media. The assumption is that a stronger position for women ensures a safer society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>&#8220;If we want to provide aid effectively, we will have to better understand the context in Yemen. This conference will contribute to that.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Yemen deserves our attention,&#8221; says Sam Geus, organiser of the meeting. &#8220;The needs are enormous. In addition, the conflict is extremely complex. If we want to provide aid effectively, we will have to better understand the context in Yemen. This conference will contribute to that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The conference programme<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the plenary room, Yemen expert Laila al-Zwaini outlined the current state of the conflict and what this means for the female population. The ambassador for the Netherlands in Yemen spoke about international policy and the founders and presidents of Yamaan Foundation and FCDF highlighted the importance of mental health and psychosocial support in times of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>In this video, Jamal Badr, who works for Cordaid in the Netherlands, tells us about his life in Yemen and his experiences after the war started.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\n<div class=\"oembed-component\" data-module=\"oembed\" data-source=\"consent_embed_youtube\" data-type=\"video\" data-cookiebot=\"1\">\n\t<div class=\"oembed-component__content\">\n\t\t<div class=\"oembed-placeholder\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"oembed-placeholder__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<p>This content is available after accepting the cookies.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\n\n\n\n\t\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<button class=\"btn\n\tbtn--primary js-consent-button\"        type=\"video\"  >\n\t\n\t\t\t<span class=\"btn__text\">\n\t\t\tChange cookie-settings\n\t\t<\/span>\n\t\n\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t<template>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"oembed-video\">\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"oembed-video__thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/i.ytimg.com\/vi\/IARb2KPCb1k\/maxresdefault.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\">\n\t\t<div class=\"oembed-video__content\">\n\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Between war and hope in Yemen | Cordaid\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IARb2KPCb1k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<button class=\"oembed-video__play\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"screen-reader-text\">\n\t\t\t\t\tPlay video\n\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/button>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/template>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Calling attention to the crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the goals of the conference, calling the attention of the Dutch media to the crisis in Yemen, proved successful with multiple publications in national media outlets, such as the renowned newspapers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volkskrant.nl\/columns-opinie\/waarom-het-hier-en-nu-over-jemen-moet-gaan~bb1e9c5c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">De Volkskrant<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.nl\/nieuws\/2021\/12\/06\/in-jemen-kan-iedereen-veilig-oorlogsmisdrijven-plegen-a4067988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NRC<\/a> and TV news network <a href=\"https:\/\/nos.nl\/artikel\/2408210-psychische-problemen-zijn-onzichtbare-littekens-van-oorlog-in-jemen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laila al-Zwaini, who gave a brief and general outline of the political context in Yemen, alleged during the first plenary session: \u201cThe men made war but hopefully the women will make peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Bilqis Jubari, chairwoman of FCDF, claimed that &#8220;mental health is a human right and that you cannot separate a person\u2019s psychological suffering from the economic, social and security crises they are coping with&#8221;. Her recommendation: mental health and psychosocial support must be seen as integral, cross-cutting components in all humanitarian interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the key points made during the workshop on <em>sexual health and reproductive rights<\/em> is that also maternal and child health care, actions against gender-based violence and women empowerment are not sufficiently integrated into humanitarian and development interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cordaid in Yemen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2018, together with a number of Yemeni partner organisations, Cordaid has been working in Yemen on emergency aid and healthcare, with a substantial programme for mother and child care in the northern province of Damar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the capital, Cordaid also supports partner FCDF in providing mental care and psychosocial support services to people with mental disorders. In four clinics employees are trained to recognise and address psychological problems. Volunteers are also trained to identify and, if necessary, refer people in psychological distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with our Yemeni partners we also provide emergency aid, including food, water, hygiene, shelter, and financial support.
