Cordaid stresses people-centred resilience approaches at Global Platform

During the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2017, Cordaid will show that people-centered and integrated resilience approaches offer practical guidance to support the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The GPDRR 2017, taking place from 22-26 May 2017 in Cancun Mexico, will mark the first opportunity for the international community to review global progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. It is the most important international forum dedicated to the DRR agenda.

At a global level, there is widespread recognition of the benefits of integrating policies, practices and investments to address climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and climate change mitigation.

At a local level, this integrated approach becomes a necessity as communities understand and deal with climate change and disasters in a holistic way to develop more resilient answers. Local participatory disaster risk analysis, integration of risk reduction into development measures, and the inclusion of people’s inputs in disaster risk governance are therefore critical for resilient and sustainable development. It is easier and more effective for governments to develop plans with the active inputs from communities and to have their engagement in implementation.

Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

Cordaid and Partners for Resilience play a broker role to ensure the inputs of the communities are included in the development plans of the local and national authorities, and to promote that local voices are being heard at regional and global conferences and included in regional and global frameworks. We aim to show that scaling out of integrated approaches to strengthen community resilience requires a coherent approach involving different actors. Such a community-driven approach we mostly realize through the establishment of well-functioning multi-stakeholder platforms, that allow for common agenda setting and action.
