With profound joy and hope, Cordaid joins the universal Catholic community in welcoming His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, makes history as the first American-born Pope. His choice of the name Leo carries deep significance as we approach the 134th anniversary of Leo XIII’s groundbreaking social encyclical Rerum Novarum, signaling a strong commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and justice for the most vulnerable.
Identification with peace, solidarity, and charity
Father J. Stuyt, member of the Supervisory Board of Cordaid and Rector of the Krijtberg in Amsterdam, states:
“The international Caritas network has known Bishop Prevost for many years as a man with a heart for the poor open for dialogue for all people of good will; he has been an active promotor of the work of Caritas in his diocese.”
Having served as Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru and on the Caritas Peru Board of Directors, Pope Leo brings valuable experience working alongside communities affected by poverty and inequality. His immediate identification with issues of peace, solidarity, and charity reinforces our shared mission to serve where needs are greatest.
His leadership inspires us
As a faith-based organisation rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, Cordaid supports Pope Leo XIV’s vision for a Church that responds “both to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.” In a world facing conflict, displacement, inequality, and ecological challenges, his leadership inspires us to strengthen our work accompanying communities toward justice, peace, and integral human development.
We look forward to continuing our work under his guidance, building bridges of solidarity that transcend borders and leave no one behind.
In solidarity and hope,
Cordaid
