Resilient Cities Conference

Cordaid has been selected as keynote speaker to present at the Resilient Cities Conference, a global platform for urban resilience and climate change adaptation, hosted every year in Bonn, Germany.

Resilient Cities 2017 takes place from 4-6 May 2017. More than 500 participants are expected, among which local government representatives, international organizations, private and public sector resilience and climate change adaptation experts, researchers, and civil society representatives.

The Cordaid presentation entitled ‘Breaking the disaster cycle: Putting people in the lead in resilient recovery’, is part of a theme session on integrated disaster and climate resilience approaches in cities which takes place on 4 may between 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m..

Our presentation will share lessons learned from the implementation of effective disaster recovery strategies in the municipality of Guiuan, Philippines. Cordaid’s extensive experience in disaster risk management has shown that it is possible to strengthen the resilience of neighborhoods vulnerable to disasters by taking a participatory approach.

In Guiuan, risk reduction is integrated into recovery programming with an approach that invites affected populations and other key stakeholders to collaborate in development and the implementation of an urban resilience agenda. Communities ought to be supported in negotiating the resources they need and co-creating the disaster responses they find appropriate.

The speakers of our session are:
1. Cordaid local government partner: Rectito Melquiades, Secretary to Legislative Council; Coordinator Guiuan Recovery and Sustainable Development Group, Municipality of Guiuan, Philippines

2. Harma Rademaker, Programme Manager Resilience, Cordaid

3. Sanne Vermeulen, Advocacy Expert Resilience, Cordaid

At Resilient Cities 2017, Cordaid will represent the Partners for Resilience alliance (CARE Netherlands, Cordaid, Red Cross Netherlands, Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre and Wetlands International). The Partners for Resilience Alliance is active in the urban resilience context. For more information:
